LOVE-LOVE MAGIC CITY CHALLENGE FINISHES UP FIRST YEAR WITH A “HIT”
The first Love-Love Magic City Tennis Challenge finished up on Friday March 8., with the final play-offs. Monday and Tuesday of that week was a challenging doubles tennis tournament in our great Magic city. Close to 200 players participated in the tournament, playing at clubs throughout Birmingham. Beautiful mint julep cups, compliments of Barton-Clay Fine Jewelers, were presented to all the winners, and consolation winners received colorful T-shirts, compliments of J. Rag, Inc. and Mt. Brook Sporting Goods, and unique tennis bag tags.
A pro-vote was ongoing from Feb. 1 through the day of the finals where everyone had the opportunity to vote for their “Pro of the Year” choice. Just the pro-vote alone raised over $7,600 in support of the city’s finest tennis pros. Lizzie Jeffcoat won the pro-vote and was presented with a beautiful engraved Loving-Cup from Barton-Clay Fine Jewelers and a new Dell Laptop computer, compliments of Dell and Bill Rodrigues.
Additional sponsors for the tennis tournament were Brasfield & Gorrie, NCP Solutions, BCBS of Alabama, Iberia Bank, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., United and Sterne Agee, who brought tennis legend Stan Smith to Birmingham to be a part of this first year event.
The tremendous success of the Love-Love Magic City Challenge raised over $100,000, which will benefit the Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation. The Foundation directly supports patient care and GI cancer research at UAB under the direction of Dr. Martin J. Heslin.
Sincere thanks goes to all who participated and supported this great tournament. The sponsors, Tennis pro’s, tournament players and volunteers made this all happen. The 2014 tournament date will be posted on the blog by the end of August so begin practicing up for the 2nd Love-love Magic City Tennis Challenge!!!
